More than 500 young performers set to star in Christmas parade

Hundreds of young people from Swansea drama and dance groups will take part in this year's city centre Christmas parade.

Xmas2018

Aged from around three to 18, they will dance, shimmy, sashay and stroll their way along the parade route on the evening of Sunday, November 17.

Their festive themes will range from the Swan Lake ballet to modern street dance to Christmas trees and shining stars.

Their costumes will range from string lights and illuminated hairbands to tutus, capes and leotards.

They all accepted a Swansea Council invitation to dress up and entertain thousands of spectators in the parade.

The groups are: Melin Theatre Arts, Swansea Dance Twerk Team, Acting Up Theatre Company/Maria Evans Academy, Company J, Barton Dance Academy,  Zumba with Sion, Bernadette Jones School of Irish Dance, Swansea Dancing Samba, Bonymaen Kids Play Initiative, Class Act Theatre School, Jermin Productions, the Carley Lewis School of Dance, Rising Stars, the Joan Williams Stage School and Swansea Little Theatre.

They will join a wide range of other participants, including local bands, organisations with eye-catching floats, professional entertainers - and Santa.

Together, they will help deliver a general Christmas theme and entertain the crowds.

The council's Special Events team - behind successes such as the annual Wales Airshow - is organising the free event to usher in a busy festive season for shoppers, businesses, residents and visitors.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council's cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: "The response from drama and dance groups was fantastic - I thank them all for wanting to be a part of this festive and special community event. They will all add a touch of their individual magic to the parade.

"They're all eager to help give the crowds a great evening of festive entertainment. We want the parade to add a great addition to the city's 50th anniversary celebrations.

"Our team continues to plan the event and we'll announce other key elements in due course."

Swansea's 2019 Christmas Parade and Lights Switch-on is due to take place from 5pm on November 17.

The route will be from the Dylan Thomas centre, up Wind Street, Castle Street and High Street, into Alexandra Road, down Orchard Street and along The Kingsway.

The council's main Christmas attractions include the annual Christmas Street Market, largely in Oxford Street from November 15, and Santa's Grotto, in Oxford Street from November 16.

Waterfront Winterland, being delivered by Sayers Events and 11th Hour in partnership with the council, is due to take place on Museum Park from November 15 to January 5.
