Lifeguard courses open up a world of opportunities

LIFEGUARD courses that equip people with vital lifesaving skills and lead to qualifications recognised around the world are taking place at the Wales National Pool this summer.

Wales National Pool Swansea

Swansea Council's Water Safety Team is behind the training as part of its support for the Royal Life Saving Society's #BeaLifeguard campaign.

Two courses are taking place - the first between 22 and 28 of July and the second between 12 and 18 of August.

Those who successfully complete either will receive the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) along with a number of additional elements such as AED and First Aid at Work, that have been included at a discounted rate.

As well as qualifying people to work as pool lifeguards in the UK the NPLQ is also recognised internationally so opens up opportunities to work overseas.

Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn new skills and get involved in lifeguarding so we are very pleased to again be supporting the RLSS's campaign.

"These courses not only equip people with the skills to save lives but also opens up many opportunities for work both at home and abroad."

The Wales National Pool regularly recruits lifeguards and General Manager Jeremy Cole said the job suits a variety of lifestyles.

"Our qualified lifeguards have a variety of backgrounds and the job suits all kinds of lifestyles.

"We have full-time lifeguards, lifeguards who work part-time around school hours or other commitments and students or people looking to start a career in the leisure industry.

"It is a very rewarding being part of the team and it is a varied role."

The standard charge for either course is £300, concession is £240 and they are available to Passport to Leisure holders for £150.

Every candidate attending a NPLQ course must be 16-years-old at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and must be a competent swimmer able to jump and dive into deep water; swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds and swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water.

Online booking is now open at: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/watersafety/t-qkjvog (July course) or https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/watersafety/t-qkjapx (August course).
