Service scheme could save scooter owners hundreds of pounds

A new city centre service has been launched to help Swansea people who own mobility scooters.

MobilityRepairs

The service and repair scheme is based at the Quadrant bus station and is run by Swansea Mobility Hire.

Regular servicing could save the owners of mobility scooters, power chairs and wheelchairs hundreds of pounds in unforeseen repair bills.

Revenue generated by the Swansea Council-run mobility hire team will be reinvested in important council services.

Robert Francis-Davies, the council's cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: "People in Swansea may spend up to £1,500 - or more - on a new mobility scooter so it's important they keep the equipment in good condition.

"Our Swansea Mobility Hire team are experts in caring for mobility scooters, power chairs and wheelchairs; they hire out thousands every year and care for their own fleet of 46 scooters, four power chairs and 12 wheelchairs.

"There's a great deal of experience in the team and they offer fast, responsive work, with a scooter service taking around an hour."

Mobility scooter manufacturers recommend annual servicing - and faults can occur through wear and tear or use in wet weather.

The most regular faults include electrical difficulties with the machines' power units. Tyres and inner tubes are other important items to keep in tip-top condition.

Swansea Mobility Hire already hires out powered scooters, wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs to help people who have limited mobility (through permanent or temporary disablement, illness, accident or age) to shop or visit other facilities within the city centre.

Their scooters are available for individuals of up to 35 stone in weight.

Centrally located for easy access to city centre shops and facilities, they are open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm.
